KATHMANDU: Veteran actress Laxmi Shrestha, best known for her beloved role as ‘Apsara Aama’—the witty and sharp-tongued wife of Khadka Ji in the popular comedy serial Meri Bassai—has passed away.

She was battling breast cancer and other health complications for a long time.

According to fellow actress Sushila Niraula (Bimali), Shrestha breathed her last on Friday night at her residence in Baluwakhani, Kapan, Kathmandu.

Her health had been deteriorating for several months. She was admitted to Bhaktapur Cancer Hospital four months ago, but after no signs of improvement, doctors had advised her to rest at home around a month ago. Since then, she had been bedridden.

Laxmi Shrestha’s portrayal of Apsara Aama left a lasting impression on audiences through her sharp dialogues, humorous exchanges, and her iconic on-screen chemistry with Khadka Ji. The duo was widely loved, and the character made her a household name in Nepal.

Apart from Meri Bassai, Shrestha had also acted in several other popular TV series including Jire Khursani, Kanchi, and Ulto Sulto.

She remained active in the Nepali entertainment industry for many years.

According to family sources, her final rites will be performed at Pashupati Aryaghat on Saturday morning.
