KATHMANDU: Ahead of the upcoming House of Representatives election on March 5, a total of 75 licensed firearms have been submitted to the police in Banke district.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Deepak Patali confirmed that the weapons have been handed over to local police offices and outposts across the district.
The surrendered firearms include licensed guns and bore-barrel weapons.
The move comes as part of a district administration initiative urging citizens to temporarily surrender firearms to ensure election security.
In parallel, authorities have begun preparations to roll out a voter education campaign across all eight local levels of Banke.
Election Officer Tek Bahadur Shahi stated that each local unit will have a designated contact person who will train volunteers to carry voter education to every ward and community.
A total of 81 volunteers will be deployed across 81 wards to ensure comprehensive outreach.
“The Election Commission has issued the program schedule. Some technical preparations remain, after which voter education activities will begin,” Shahi added.
Banke, which consists of three electoral constituencies, has a total of 350,371 registered voters, with 139 polling centers and 400 polling stations set up for the elections, according to the District Election Office.
