KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) lawmaker Ishwari Neupane has resigned as chairperson of the Parliamentary Hearing Committee in order to file her candidacy for the chairmanship of the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee.

She tendered her resignation to Speaker Dev Raj Ghimire on Tuesday.

Earlier in the day, an NC office-bearers’ meeting chaired by party president Sher Bahadur Deuba had decided to field Neupane for the State Affairs Committee chair.

The position became vacant after Ramhari Khatiwada stepped down following disputes over the “cooling-off period” issue.

Since both the State Affairs Committee and the Hearing Committee fall under NC’s share as per the ruling coalition’s agreement, the party decided to shift Neupane to the new post.

With the main opposition CPN (Maoist Centre) opting not to put forward a candidate, Neupane is likely to be unanimously elected if no other lawmaker files nominations.

Meanwhile, the process of electing a new chairperson for the Parliamentary Hearing Committee—a joint body of the House of Representatives and the National Assembly—will now begin.

The committee carries a crucial responsibility of conducting hearings and scrutinizing the qualifications of nominees for constitutional bodies.
