24 inmates recaptured after mass prison break in Rajbiraj

KATHMANDU: Rajbiraj District Prison witnessed a major jailbreak after inmates set fire inside the facility and broke the main gate’s lock to escape.

According to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Jitendra Kumar Basnet, out of 205 inmates who fled, 34 were recaptured within an hour, including 24 from Rajbiraj.

Security forces have intensified search operations, particularly along the Nepal-India border, amid suspicions that many escapees may attempt to flee into India.

Police said most of the escapees were from the prison’s “B Block.” The incident began when prisoners set fire to furniture and bedding before forcing open the main gate.

The prison houses a total of 395 inmates, including 23 women, spread across three separate blocks: two for male inmates (A and B) and one for females.
