Martyrs Memorial Women’s Rugby Sevens set for May 26

KATHMANDU: The Martyrs Memorial National Women’s Rugby Sevens Championship is scheduled to take place on Jestha 12 (May 26 at the Dasharath Stadium, Tripureshwar.

The event is organized by Shaheed Smriti Sports Academy with technical and managerial support from the Nepal Rugby Association.

This championship is part of the First Martyrs Memorial National Sports Tournament, which also includes national-level competitions in badminton, futsal, and taekwondo.

A total of seven teams will compete in the rugby championship, including five provincial teams — Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, Karnali, and Sudurpashchim — along with two departmental teams: Tribhuvan Army Club and APF Club.

These teams will be divided into two groups, and the competition will follow a league-cum-knockout format.

At a joint press conference held on Friday, organizers highlighted the limited number of women’s rugby competitions and emphasized the importance of hosting this event to promote the sport among women.

The Nepal Rugby Association’s treasurer and tournament coordinator, Deepak Adhikari, informed that each player will be insured with accidental coverage worth Rs 125,000.

He also shared that the estimated cost for organizing the championship is around Rs 1.9 million.

The winning team will receive a cash prize of Rs 100,000, while the runner-up will take home Rs 50,000.

The Best Player of the Tournament will be awarded Rs 7,000 and a trophy.

Due to a lack of preparation, Lumbini and Gandaki Provinces will not be participating in the event, according to Adhikari.

Bal Krishna KC, treasurer of the Shaheed Smriti Sports Academy, said the tournament is being organized in collaboration with the National Sports Council (NSC) and the Martyrs Memorial Council.

He added that the Academy is contributing NRs 1.1 million for the women’s rugby championship, with the remaining budget being managed by the Rugby Association.

Meanwhile, futsal and badminton competitions under the national sports event will be held in Jhapa, while the taekwondo championship will be hosted in Kathmandu.
