KATHMANDU: Nepal Police have arrested two women for allegedly luring a government employee into a honeytrap through social media and extorting hundreds of thousands of rupees from him.

The arrested have been identified as 34-year-old Mamata Tamang, a resident of Kailali currently living in Kathmandu Metropolitan City-5, and 34-year-old Aanchal Shrestha, also known as Aanchal Chauguthi, from Bhaktapur Municipality-17.

According to police, the duo trapped a government official and extorted Rs 500,000 from him. As per Superintendent of Police Kaji Kumar Acharya, spokesperson at the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office, the women operated a Facebook account under the name “TikTok Girl” and sent a friend request to a government employee in his mid-50s earlier this year in March.

The man accepted the request after seeing the profile photo of an attractive young woman. About a week later, he received a “Hi” message from the account, to which he replied “Hello.” Their casual chat soon turned personal and intimate.

After a week of online conversation, “TikTok Girl” invited the man for coffee in Thamel, which he agreed to. At the first meeting, two women showed up, and after a brief coffee chat, they parted ways.

A week later, the same account invited him again to Thamel for food and drinks. During the second meeting, the man was reportedly served snacks and alcoholic beverages, which caused him to lose consciousness. While he was unconscious, the women allegedly took obscene photos and videos of him.

Tamang and Chauguthi later sent screenshots of these materials to the victim via Facebook Messenger, threatening to file a sexual assault case against him unless he handed over a house and four aana (approximately 1360 square feet) of land in Kathmandu. Under pressure, the man issued them a cheque worth Rs 500,000.

The police arrested the duo on Wednesday from Hanumansthan, Kathmandu Metropolitan City-11. They also seized two mobile phones and a cheque for Rs 500,000 issued in the name of Aanchal Chauguthi from Prime Commercial Bank.

The women have been handed over to the District Police Office, Bhadra Kali, for further investigation under charges related to criminal profiteering.
