KATHMANDU: Police in Sankhuwasabha have detained the parents of a six-year-old girl and taken custody of her body just before cremation, suspecting foul play in her death.

The incident occurred in Siprung, Ward 4 of Bhotkhola Rural Municipality, where preparations were underway to cremate the body of Yunika Tamang, daughter of Gopal Tamang.

Acting on suspicion of a possible homicide, a team from the District Police Office intervened and transported the body to the district hospital morgue for post-mortem.

According to preliminary investigations, a domestic dispute broke out on Baisakh 30 between Yunika’s father, Gopal Tamang, and his sister-in-law (Yunika’s aunt), Kalpana Tamang. During the altercation, Kalpana allegedly pushed the child off a nearby ledge in a fit of rage.

Yunika sustained serious injuries from the fall and later succumbed to them on Wednesday while undergoing treatment at Nobel Hospital in Biratnagar.

Police Inspector Abhishek Shrestha, spokesperson for the District Police Office, confirmed that authorities intercepted the family while they were transporting the body home for cremation.

Both Gopal Tamang and Kalpana Tamang have been taken into custody for further investigation.

Inspector Shrestha stated that preparations are underway to present the suspects before the court to seek an extension of their custody for continued investigation.
