KATHMANDU: An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 struck Baitadi district in Sudurpaschim Province early this morning, according to the National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Center, Kathmandu.

The tremor was recorded at 1:48 AM, with its epicenter located near Khalanga, the district headquarters.

The quake jolted residents awake from their deep sleep, causing panic and prompting many to rush out of their homes.

Though the earthquake was strongly felt, no immediate reports of casualties or major property damage have been confirmed so far.

The District Police Office in Baitadi has mobilized all its units and is coordinating with local authorities to collect detailed information on possible damages.

Officials have stated that a full assessment may take some time.
