Stop disaster publicity, prioritize relief: MP Sherpa
Speaking at the committee meeting on Thursday, Sherpa emphasized the need to end the practice of politicians prioritizing speeches and photo-ops over actual relief work.

KATHMANDU: President of the Federalism Consolidation and National Concerns Committee, Sonam Gyalzen Sherpa, has criticized the trend of seeking publicity during disasters, saying it obstructs effective rescue and relief efforts.
Speaking at the committee meeting on Thursday, Sherpa emphasized the need to end the practice of politicians prioritizing speeches and photo-ops over actual relief work.
“Even during emergencies, some feel the need to give speeches, and relief materials are often sidelined for the sake of sending leaders in helicopters,” he said.
Sherpa also expressed concern over the bureaucratic delays in preparing disaster management reports. “When asked for reports, officials take four to five months. But when it’s about foreign trips, they’re ready overnight,” he remarked, urging an end to such double standards.
He stressed that disaster management responsibilities should be decentralized and handed over to local governments through proper coordination among all three tiers of government.
Sherpa also advocated for forming a dedicated disaster management task force.
He highlighted the importance of selecting qualified individuals in advance to ensure timely and effective action.
