KATHMANDU: The temporary Bailey bridge installed over the Sunkoshi River at Phoksingtar along the Diktel–Gaighat road section of the Sagarmatha Highway has been removed.

Following the collapse of the motorable concrete bridge at Phoksingtar due to last year’s floods, a temporary Bailey bridge had been installed to maintain connectivity with the eastern Terai districts.

However, with the water level in the river rising, the Bailey bridge was removed, according to Pashupati Gyawali, Chief of the Gaighat–Diktel Road Project.

The Department of Roads had signed an agreement worth Rs 10.2 million with a construction company for the installation and removal of the bridge.

The removal has severely disrupted transportation between Diktel and key cities such as Gaighat, Dharan, Biratnagar, and Kakarbhitta.

Commuters must now use the alternative Diktel–Halesi–Jayaram–Ghurmi–Katari route, which is longer, narrower, and more challenging for travel.
