NC MP Mishra urges no tax hike on tobacco, alcohol in budget
He also urged the government to focus on curbing customs leakages caused by collusion, highlighting ongoing concerns about middlemen in Nepal.

KATHMANDU: During a special session of the National Assembly on Wednesday, Nepali Congress lawmaker Narayandatta Mishra appealed to the Finance Minister not to raise taxes on cigarettes and alcohol in the upcoming fiscal year’s budget.
Mishra argued that increasing taxes on these products would encourage traders to inflate production, stockpile goods in warehouses, and create artificial shortages in the market, which would be counterproductive.
He also urged the government to focus on curbing customs leakages caused by collusion, highlighting ongoing concerns about middlemen in Nepal.
Further, Mishra emphasized the need to end the practice in parliament where members clap for government actions when in the majority and simply oppose when in the minority, calling for a more constructive and issue-based approach.
