KATHMANDU: The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has projected above-average rainfall and higher temperatures during the monsoon season this year.
At the “National Monsoon Forum 2082” held Wednesday in Lalitpur, senior meteorologists revealed these forecasts.
Senior meteorologist Bibhuti Pokhrel stated that rainfall across the country is expected to range from 35% to 65% above average, depending on the region.
She also noted that maximum temperatures during the monsoon are likely to be higher than usual.
Pokhrel added that temperature increases, by 35% to 65% depending on location, are anticipated, with minimum temperatures also projected to exceed historical averages.
Senior meteorologist Pratibha Mandhar emphasized that about 80% of Nepal’s annual rainfall occurs during the monsoon season, underscoring the importance of preparedness to minimize potential damage.
Mandhar highlighted that nearly 40% of disasters in Nepal take place during the monsoon period, including landslides and floods, leading to significant loss of life and property.
She stressed that early preparation can help reduce risks to lives and assets.
The monsoon season, spanning from June to September, is responsible for over 300 deaths and damages exceeding 200 million USD annually in Nepal, according to the department.
