KATHMANDU: The historic Upardang Gadhi area, located in Ichchhakamana Rural Municipality–7 of Chitwan, once served as the district’s administrative headquarters until the early 1960s.

Sitting at an altitude of 1,275 meters above sea level, the fort holds significant historical and strategic value.

Originally built around 1800 AD by Shatrubhanjan Shah, the son of Bahadur Shah and grandson of King Prithvi Narayan Shah, the fort was constructed during the unification of the Baise-Chaubise states.

It served as a stronghold to defend against British forces during that era.

Upardang Gadhi was not only a military base but also housed vital government offices and a court, functioning as Chitwan’s main administrative center until the 1960s.

In a major preservation effort, the dilapidated Kot House, a key structure within the fort complex, has now been reconstructed, restoring part of the site’s former glory.

The reconstruction is expected to boost historical tourism and raise awareness about Nepal’s rich heritage.

Local authorities and heritage conservationists are calling for further restoration of the area to preserve its cultural and historical legacy for future generations.
