KATHMANDU: Six members of a single family from Makalu Rural Municipality-2 have successfully summited Mt. Makalu, the world’s fifth-highest mountain at 8,485 meters.

The group included four brothers, one sister, and a niece — all from the same household — who reached the summit on May 8 (Baisakh 26).

The climbers are the children and granddaughter of Ngima Ongjuk Sherpa, a local of Makalu-2.

According to team member Muktuk Lakpa Sherpa, the ascent was made in pursuit of a world record.

The siblings — Muktuk Sherpa, Ngima Dorchi Sherpa, Ang D. Sherpa, Pechumwe Sherpa, and their sister Pasang Yangji Sherpa — were joined by 23-year-old Enima Sherpa, the daughter of one of the brothers.

Enima is also believed to be the youngest woman ever to summit Mt. Makalu.

“We are the first family where six members — five siblings and a niece — have climbed Makalu together,” Pasang Yangji proudly stated. “We also claim Enima is the youngest female to reach the summit of this peak.”

In recognition of this extraordinary achievement, Makalu Rural Municipality, the Federation of Nepali Journalists Sankhuwasabha chapter, and the Sherpa Association have jointly honored the family.
