KATHMANDU: The Government of Nepal has appointed economist Dr. Bishwanath Paudel as the new Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank.

The decision was made during a Cabinet meeting held this evening at the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar.

According to Government Spokesperson and Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, the appointment was based on the recommendation of a three-member selection committee headed by Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, Minister Gurung informed that the committee had recommended three candidates: Dr. Bishwanath Paudel, acting governor Neelam Dhungana, and former secretary Dr. Dinesh Bhattarai.

The Cabinet chose Dr. Paudel for the position.

Dr. Paudel is a former Vice Chairman of the National Planning Commission.

He had previously served as a member of the governor recommendation committee, but later resigned to be considered as a candidate.

The appointment of the new central bank governor had been a subject of significant public and political interest in recent days.
