KATHMANDU: Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport, Devendra Dahal, has stressed the importance of increasing domestic consumption of cement, highlighting Nepal’s self-sufficiency in cement production.

Speaking at a program organized by the Cement Manufacturers Association in Lalitpur on Monday, Minister Dahal said that since Nepal has now become fully self-reliant in cement, the focus should shift towards maximizing its use within the country.

“I asked the association’s president if we are fully self-reliant in cement. He said not only are we self-reliant, but we are also in a position to export,” Dahal stated. “If that is the case, why not promote its usage domestically? Just as we are aiming to consume domestically produced electricity, we must do the same with cement.”

The minister emphasized that producers should operate on lower margins but increase volume to ensure greater output. He further added that Nepal should now move towards adopting concrete-based road technologies to enhance infrastructure quality.

Minister Dahal also said that the government is working with special focus on policy-making related to roads and connectivity, aiming to make Nepal a model in terms of infrastructure connectivity. He stressed the need to learn from the developmental progress of neighboring countries like China and India.

Claiming that Nepal has made significant progress in the last 15 years, Dahal stated that identifying problems early and moving forward strategically makes implementation smoother. He reiterated the government’s commitment to strong and sustainable road development.
