KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has directed officials not to invite individuals to government-organized events if they have a record of repeated absence, despite being formally invited.

Speaking at a meeting of the Republic Day Main Ceremony Committee held at Singha Durbar on Monday, PM Oli made strong remarks targeting those who fail to attend official programs, hinting specifically at Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balen Shah.

“There are people who we always invite, include their names, but they never show up. What’s the point of keeping their names every time?” he questioned.

Referring to past instances, Oli said the government should maintain a record of such absentees and exclude them from future invitations. “This culture of listing names just for the sake of formality, without participation or understanding the value of the event, should end,” he emphasized.

PM Oli also stressed that Republic Day should be celebrated at the public level, not just through government functions. He called for broader engagement and genuine participation in national celebrations.

Quoting his direct remarks: “There are people who never come, yet their names must always be included. Is it necessary to continue this tradition just for appearances? Some people are listed in every function but never show up. What’s the point of repeatedly including names that have no meaning or contribution? Next time, check the records—if they never attend, don’t invite them.”
