KATHMANDU: An area in Khudipul Wari, Marsyangdi Rural Municipality-9, has been named ‘Samba Chowk’ in honor of the famous football player of the Nepali women’s football team, Sabitra Bhandari.

The naming ceremony was held today at Pamchok, her hometown, where local leaders, officials, and community members gathered to celebrate her extraordinary contributions to Nepali football.

Chairperson of Marsyangdi Rural Municipality, Arjun Gurung, unveiled Sabitra’s portrait and formally declared the renaming of the area.

“Sabitra has not only brought recognition to our municipality and district but has also made Nepal proud on the international stage,” Gurung said. “Naming this junction in her honor is a gesture of respect and a source of inspiration for her continued journey in football.”

Chief District Officer Madhav Prasad Pokharel echoed similar sentiments, stating that dedicating public spaces to national heroes like Sabitra is a meaningful way to acknowledge their achievements.

He also highlighted the supportive role of the Armed Police Force (APF) in Sabitra’s early career.

Sabitra’s father, Thaman Bahadur Bhandari, expressed deep happiness and gratitude for the honor bestowed upon his daughter. “This recognition is not just a moment of pride for our family, but also a powerful encouragement for Sabitra to aim even higher,” he said.

Ward Chairperson Harishchandra Thapa noted that renaming the prominent junction — located on the popular Annapurna-Manang trekking route — will enhance the identity of both the place and its most celebrated daughter. “This is a meaningful step in preserving local pride and history,” he added.

Known affectionately as “Samba,” Sabitra Bhandari began her professional football journey with the Armed Police Force Club and has since become Nepal’s all-time leading goal scorer in women’s football. She also holds the national record for the highest number of goals scored in international competitions.

Born and raised in Pamchok village (formerly Simpani VDC-7), Sabitra’s rise from a rural village to international acclaim stands as a powerful symbol of dedication, talent, and national pride.
