KATHMANDU: Severe storms sweeping through the U.S. states of Missouri and Kentucky have left at least 21 people dead and caused widespread destruction and power outages affecting over 200,000 residents.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear confirmed that 14 people were killed in his state, while Missouri reported seven deaths.

The storm hit Laurel County in southeastern Kentucky early Saturday morning, causing significant damage.

Authorities warned that the death toll could rise as rescue operations continue.

In Missouri, officials said Friday’s storms damaged more than 5,000 buildings.

Many rooftops were torn off, and power lines were brought down, leaving thousands in the dark.

Around 100,000 homes in St. Louis alone experienced power outages.

Fire departments reported door-to-door inspections are ongoing in the hardest-hit areas to assess damage and assist victims.

Emergency services remain on high alert as cleanup efforts begin.
