KATHMANDU: For the first time since the Russia–Ukraine war began nearly three years ago, direct talks between the two nations have achieved significant progress.

Mediated by Turkey, the two-and-a-half-hour-long negotiations resulted in an agreement to release 1,000 prisoners of war from each side.

This marked the first face-to-face dialogue between Russian and Ukrainian officials since March 2022, signaling a potential turning point in the prolonged conflict.

During the talks, Russia reportedly presented new, complex conditions, including the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from certain occupied territories.

Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Serhiy Khlan welcomed the development, calling it “a moment of happiness for a thousand Ukrainian families.” Defense Minister Rustem Umerov confirmed that the next round of talks is already being scheduled and hinted that a possible presidential-level dialogue could lead to decisive outcomes.

Vladimir Putin’s advisor, who led the Russian delegation, also described the talks as “positive.” Further in-depth discussions are expected in the coming rounds.

However, reactions in diplomatic circles remain mixed. Some analysts suspect Russia may be staging talks to reduce international pressure from Ukraine’s Western allies.

At the same time as the negotiations, the European Union is preparing its 18th round of sanctions against Russia.

Meanwhile, former U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that only a direct meeting between him and President Putin could resolve the complex crisis.
