KATHMANDU: Geeta Gurung, a proportional representation lawmaker from the Janamat Party in Lumbini Province, has announced her resignation from the Provincial Assembly.

In a statement released alongside her resignation letter addressed to the Speaker, Gurung said she no longer felt it was appropriate to receive a salary funded by taxpayers. “I believe that no one is above the nation, the country, and the people,” she wrote. “I do not find it justifiable to accept remuneration drawn from the taxes paid by the people. Therefore, I submit my resignation effective immediately.”

Gurung’s decision has drawn attention for its rare expression of political ethics and personal accountability in public office.

Her resignation has already been formally submitted to the Speaker of the Provincial Assembly.
