KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress lawmaker Deepak Giri has strongly criticized successive governments and political parties for using the Tulsipur Airport (Tarigaun Airport) in Dang as a political tool to win elections, rather than making real developmental commitments.

Speaking during Tuesday’s session of the House of Representatives, Giri expressed frustration over the repeated promises to upgrade the airport, which he said have yet to materialize despite being regularly included in national policies and programs.

“The Prime Minister recently mentioned in his address that Tulsipur Airport will be developed, and we applauded. But we do not want that to turn into another dramatic statement with no follow-through,” said Giri. “This is Nepal’s second-oldest airport. It must be developed not just for Dang but as a viable alternative to Nepalgunj and Surkhet airports, especially during times of bad weather.”

Calling for serious government attention, Giri urged the Ministry of Finance to allocate NPR 3.42 billion in the upcoming fiscal year’s budget specifically for the airport’s upgrade. He emphasized that the investment required is not excessive, considering the airport’s strategic importance.

Giri, who represents Dang-3, has long been advocating for the development of Tulsipur Airport but expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of progress on the ground despite continuous efforts.

“This isn’t just a local demand—it’s a national necessity,” he added, pressing the government to ensure the commitment does not fade away as it has in the past.
