KATHMANDU: 14 people have died and six others have been hospitalized after allegedly consuming spurious liquor in the Majitha area of Amritsar, Punjab.

According to Punjab Police, the incident occurred across five villages in the district.

The incident came to light late last night around 9:45 PM, when authorities received reports of multiple deaths linked to toxic alcohol consumption.

Speaking to the media, Amritsar SSP Maninder Singh said, “We received information late last night regarding deaths caused by the consumption of illicit liquor. We immediately reached the affected areas and arrested four individuals, including the main supplier, Parambjeet Singh.”

Singh confirmed that 14 people had died, while six others are currently undergoing treatment in hospital. Local authorities have launched a full-scale investigation.

Deputy Commissioner Sakshi S. stated that medical teams have been dispatched to each of the affected villages to conduct door-to-door health screenings and ensure no other residents have been exposed to the toxic liquor.

The Punjab government has issued strict directives to take strong action against those involved in the manufacturing and distribution of illicit liquor.
