KATHMANDU: The newly constructed Dagbung (Gurans) trekking trail in Ramprasad Rai Rural Municipality has quickly become a favorite among both domestic and international tourists.

Nestled amidst natural beauty and rhododendron forests, the trail offers breathtaking views, rich cultural experiences, and a serene escape into the Eastern Himalayan landscape.

Local resident Jagadish Rai shared that the scenic combination of blooming rhododendrons, expansive meadows, and panoramic mountain vistas has captivated the hearts of visitors. “Tourists enjoy not only the natural beauty but also the taste of local cuisine. The trail has helped boost local businesses and promote indigenous products,” he added.

The name “Dagbung” comes from the Kirati language, meaning “rhododendron.” True to its name, the trail takes trekkers through vibrant rhododendron forests, offering clear views of iconic Himalayan peaks including Mt. Everest, Makalu, and Kangchenjunga.

According to Bhujel, another local involved in promoting the trail, the increased tourist flow has significantly benefited local trade and hospitality.

The trail also provides stunning views of the high Himalayas and the scenic lowlands of the Terai, making it a diverse and attractive destination for all nature lovers.

Jogendra Rai, Ward Chairperson of Ramprasad Rai-1, highlighted that the trail was developed not only to protect the national flower Laligurans (Rhododendron) but also to establish the area as a prominent tourism hub. “We aim to make this one of the key tourism destinations of the rural municipality,” he said.

So far, approximately R s7 million (USD 53,000) has been invested in constructing the trail, funded under the Nepal Climate Model Program. The trail currently stretches around seven kilometers from Okhre Bazaar and will be extended to connect with Chulachuli, a significant religious and tourist site in Ward No. 4.

To further attract visitors, the municipality has started expanding tea cultivation across nearly 100 ropanis (about 5 hectares) of land.

Plans are also underway to develop homestay facilities along the trail and integrate the route into the broader Mundum Trekking Circuit, a cultural and spiritual trail significant to the Kirat community.

Chairperson Tham Bahadur Rai emphasized that the goal is to turn the Dagbung trail into a globally recognized tourist destination. “Our region is rich in history, culture, and natural beauty. By connecting these assets through sustainable tourism, we aim to boost the local economy and preserve our heritage,” he said.
