French climber dies during Kanchenjunga Ascent
Preliminary reports from her guide suggest she experienced severe breathing difficulties, which led to her death.

KATHMANDU: A 63-year-old French woman tragically died during an expedition to Mt. Kanchenjunga, Nepal’s second-highest peak and the world’s third-highest mountain, officials confirmed.
The deceased has been identified as Margareta Moring, who had been attempting the climb via the southern route of the Kanchenjunga massif in Sirijangha Rural Municipality-8, Taplejung district.
According to Inspector Rohi Kumar Sharma of the Taplejung District Police Office, Moring began her summit push on Baisakh 26 but passed away the following night at an altitude of approximately 8,000 meters.
Preliminary reports from her guide suggest she experienced severe breathing difficulties, which led to her death.
“The information about her death reached us only on Monday,” Inspector Sharma said. “Her body remains at an altitude of about 7,500 meters and retrieval efforts are being coordinated.”
Moring was accompanied by another French climber and a Nepali guide, Yogendra Tamang, during the ascent.
Authorities and rescue teams are assessing weather conditions and logistical challenges for the recovery mission.
Mt. Kanchenjunga, standing at 8,586 meters, is known for its technical difficulty and extreme altitude, making it one of the most demanding climbs in the Himalayas.
