KATHMANDU: Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Indira Rana, has said there still lies structural and social barriers for women journalists to explore their meaningful presence in the profession.

Taking part in an interaction between women journalists from Nepal and Bangladesh in the Nepali Embassy in Dhaka on Sunday evening, the Speaker said this. The event was a joint collaboration of the Initiatives of Media Women (IMW) and the Embassy.

“Women journalists are still forced to face numerous challenges and combined efforts are required to remove such barriers, hurdles and challenges,” the Deputy Speaker stressed.

She also take time to say that the media is becoming progressive compared to the past and further efforts are warranted to make it more progressive.

Nepal’s ambassador to Bangladesh, Ghanashyam Bhandari, applauded the contributions of women journalists in bringing out ‘specific stories’ of excluded and disadvantaged communities.

IMW Chair Laxmi Bhandari said the event was expected to be helpful in promoting the mutual bonding and friendship between the female journalists from both countries. As she said, female journalists’ issues from Nepal and Bangladesh are similar.

Founder and executive director of Thengamara Mohila Sabuj Sangha (TMSS), the largest women social network in the South Asia, Prof Dr Hosne Ara Begum said the first-of –its kind of interaction between the female journalists from Nepal and Bangladesh should be continued in the future, too.

Such events are crucial for extending the bilateral ties between Nepal and Bangladesh, according to her.

Over 50 women journalists spoke of their workplace challenges, demanding measures to address them.
