KATHMANDU: Indian cricketing legend Virat Kohli has officially announced his retirement from Test cricket, marking the end of an illustrious red-ball career that spanned 14 years.

The 35-year-old batting maestro made the announcement via his social media accounts on Monday, expressing heartfelt gratitude for the format that shaped his career and life.

Kohli had already informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) about his decision prior to making it public.

His retirement comes just before India’s upcoming five-match Test series against England, a series that will now miss the presence of one of India’s greatest modern-day Test batsmen.

Having already retired from T20 internationals, Kohli will now continue to represent India only in the One Day International (ODI) format.

In his farewell note, Kohli reflected on his journey in Test cricket, writing:
“It’s been 14 years since I wore the India Test cap for the first time. Honestly, I never imagined the kind of journey this format would take me on. It tested me, shaped me, and taught me lessons that will stay with me for life.”

“Playing in whites has felt like a deeply personal experience — the silent battles, long days, and those quiet moments that no one sees but are etched forever in your heart.”

“As I step away from this format, it’s not an easy decision — but it feels like the right time. I gave everything I had, and it gave me more than I could’ve ever dreamed of.”

“With a heart full of gratitude, I move forward — for the game, for my teammates, and for all those who believed in me and supported me through this journey. I’ll always look back on my Test career with a smile.”

Kohli, who made his Test debut in 2011, transformed into one of the finest batsmen of his era, captaining India to historic victories both at home and overseas. Known for his unmatched passion and aggressive style of play, he ends his red-ball journey as one of India’s most successful Test captains and most dependable batsmen.

The cricketing world will undoubtedly miss Kohli’s presence in whites, but his legacy in Test cricket will endure for generations.
