KATHMANDU: West Ham United secured a much-needed Premier League victory, defeating Manchester United 2-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday.
This marks the Hammers’ first league win since February and their first at Old Trafford since 2007.
Tomas Soucek opened the scoring in the 26th minute, converting a well-placed pass from Mohammed Kudus to notch his ninth goal of the season.
Kudus continued to be instrumental throughout the match, orchestrating attacks and creating multiple chances.
West Ham doubled their lead midway through the second half when Jarrod Bowen slotted home from close range following another low cross into the box.
Manchester United, despite some late efforts, failed to find the net. Rasmus Højlund came close on a few occasions but couldn’t convert, as United suffered their ninth home league defeat of the season – their worst record at Old Trafford since 1962.
With this win, West Ham completed the league double over Manchester United for the first time since the 2006/07 season.
The victory also sees them climb to 15th in the Premier League table, while United slip to 16th.
Elsewhere, Newcastle United took a step closer to Champions League qualification with a 2-0 win over 10-man Chelsea.
The Magpies now sit on 66 points, three clear of Chelsea, who risk falling out of the top-four race by the end of the weekend.
In other results, Crystal Palace stunned Tottenham Hotspur 2-0, while Nottingham Forest and Leicester City played out an entertaining 2-2 draw
