KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has stated that the current situation in the country does not warrant a formal declaration of socialism.

Addressing concerns raised by lawmakers during Sunday’s session of the National Assembly on the government’s policies and programs for the upcoming fiscal year, PM Oli emphasized the need to first address the growing disorder in society.

“Merely declaring socialism will not bring it into effect,” Oli said. “We must first control the anarchy that has taken root in our society. At present, that is the more urgent need.”

The Prime Minister stressed that while moving toward socialism is the government’s ultimate goal, the current environment is not suitable for its declaration.

He highlighted the growing chaos, especially in the digital space, as a pressing issue that must be addressed.

Referring to a recent incident on the 15th of the Nepali month, PM Oli criticized the lack of accountability and clarity regarding the organizers, suggesting such incidents reflect the current level of disorder in society.

“You are someone who has deeply thought about socialism and matured with that understanding,” he said, addressing a lawmaker. “But is this the right time to declare socialism? Can it be achieved just by proclamation when such levels of anarchy exist?”

He concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment to progressing toward socialism but reiterated that now is the time for practical steps, not symbolic declarations.
