KATHMANDU: Rastriya Janamorcha Chair Chitra Bahadur KC has drawn the government’s attention to the increasing illegal extraction of sand, stones, and gravel from the Kali Gandaki River, warning of severe environmental consequences.

Speaking during Sunday’s session of the House of Representatives, Chair KC expressed serious concern over the growing trend of natural resource exploitation in the river, which he said is threatening the ecological balance of the region.

He alleged that, despite a Supreme Court order prohibiting the extraction of river materials from the Kali Gandaki, government employees and local representatives have been colluding to continue the illegal activity.

KC cautioned that if immediate action is not taken to halt the extraction, there is a high risk of road collapse along the riverbanks.

Urging the government to take the issue seriously, he called on the relevant ministries to intervene promptly and effectively to stop the exploitation and protect the river’s natural integrity.
