KATHMANDU: The 2025 spring climbing season on Mt. Everest has officially begun following the completion of rope fixing to the summit.

According to Lakpa Sherpa, an expedition leader speaking from Base Camp, the task of rope fixing was especially challenging this year due to heavy snowfall and difficult conditions in the Khumbu Icefall, where large rocks and the presence of black ice made it hard to secure ladders and ropes.

A team of seven expert Sherpa climbers deployed by the 8K Expeditions successfully reached the summit of Mt. Everest at 5 PM on Friday, laying the final ropes and officially opening the route for climbers.

Prior to this, a team of five Sherpas from the same company had fixed ropes to the summits of Lhotse and Ama Dablam on Thursday and earlier in the week, respectively.

With the route to the summit now established, the Department of Tourism has formally declared the start of the Everest spring expedition season.

Favorable weather conditions are expected to result in a busy first summit window, with a high number of climbers targeting the peak.

According to the Department’s Mountaineering Section, permits have been issued to 421 climbers from 44 expedition teams so far.

The department anticipates a few more teams will join before the season peaks. In comparison, the same number of climbers from 45 teams had secured permits during last year’s spring season.

This year’s Everest expeditions have generated Rs 650 million in royalties for the government, contributing to a total of Rs 780 million in mountaineering revenue from all Himalayan peaks.
