Rain disrupts opening dy of ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Asia Qualifier

KATHMANDU: The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Asia Qualifier, which kicked off today in Thailand, faced an immediate setback as weather conditions forced the abandonment of the tournament’s opening match between Nepal and Hong Kong.
The game, scheduled to begin at 8:45 AM local time, was called off without a toss due to a wet outfield following continuous overnight rain.
As a result, both Nepal and Hong Kong were awarded one point each.
The qualifier features nine teams: host Thailand, Nepal, Bhutan, Kuwait, Qatar, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Bahrain, and the UAE.
The teams are divided into three groups. Nepal is placed in Group ‘C’ alongside Hong Kong and Bahrain. Group ‘A’ includes Thailand, Kuwait, and Bhutan, while Group ‘B’ consists of Malaysia, Qatar, and the UAE.
The group stage is being played in a double round-robin format, with each team facing others in their group twice.
The top team from each group will progress to the Super Three stage, which will also follow a round-robin format.
The top two teams at the end of the Super Three phase will qualify for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Global Qualifier.
Despite the rain-hit start, teams remain hopeful for improved weather conditions and competitive cricket in the days ahead.
