KATHMANDU: Five staff members sustained minor injuries after two individuals broke into an elementary school in Tokyo on Thursday morning and launched an attack, Japanese media reported.
The incident occurred at Tachikawa Daisan Elementary School, located in western Tokyo.
According to public broadcaster NHK, the assailants entered the premises by breaking a classroom window before assaulting the staff.
Citing police sources, Fuji TV stated that the attackers have been taken into custody. While local media initially reported four injuries, later updates confirmed that five staff members were hurt.
None of the injuries are believed to be serious.
The school, which serves more than 500 students and employs over 30 staff members, educates children as young as 7 to 8 years old in its second-grade classes.
Television footage showed a heavy police and security presence patrolling the school grounds and surrounding area. Authorities have yet to officially confirm all details of the incident.
Japan is known for its low crime rates and strict gun control laws, making violent crimes such as this relatively rare.
In a separate incident on the same day, Tokyo police arrested a man accused of stabbing two people in a subway train during a crowded commute.
He is being investigated on suspicion of attempted murder.
