JERUSALEM: An Israeli drone strike in the Lebanese port city of Sidon on Wednesday killed a senior Hamas official, according to the Israeli military and Hamas.

Hamas said in a statement that the man, identified as Khalid Ahmad al-Ahmad, was a member of its military wing and was killed at dawn by an Israeli aircraft while on his way to a mosque.

The Israeli military described al-Ahmad as “the head of operations in Hamas’ Western Brigade in Lebanon,” and said his activities posed “a threat to the State of Israel and its citizens.”

According to the military, Ahmad was responsible for planning “numerous” attacks against Israeli civilians and soldiers, and had recently been involved in weapons smuggling.

Since launching its military offensive in Gaza on Oct. 7, 2023, following a deadly Hamas attack, Israel has also targeted Hamas members operating in Lebanon.

Although a ceasefire agreement reached in November 2024 ended 14 months of cross-border fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, Israel has continued to conduct frequent airstrikes in Lebanon.
