KATHMANDU: As temperatures rise, nutritionists are encouraging people to stay hydrated and healthy with one of summer’s favorite fruits: watermelon.

Beyond its refreshing taste, watermelon is packed with health benefits.

According to experts, watermelon is 92% water, making it an excellent source of hydration.

It’s also rich in vitamin C, vitamin A, and antioxidants like lycopene, which has been linked to reduced inflammation and lower risk of heart disease.

New studies suggest that regular watermelon consumption may also support muscle recovery thanks to its citrulline content, an amino acid that helps improve blood flow and reduce soreness.

It’s a sweet treat that supports overall wellness—naturally low in calories and high in nutrients.

How to know if a watermelon is real, ripe, and natural

When buying a watermelon, especially from street vendors or markets, here’s how to make sure it’s natural and ripe:

Tips to Spot a Real & Ripe Watermelon:

  1. Look at the Field Spot (the yellow patch):

    • A deep yellow or creamy spot means it ripened naturally in the sun.

    • A white spot may indicate it was picked too early.

  2. Check for Uniform Shape:

    • A real watermelon is usually oval or round. Odd bumps or lumpy shapes may suggest uneven growth or chemical use.

  3. Knock Test (Tap It):

    • Tap it with your knuckles. A ripe one sounds deep and hollow. A dull sound means it may be underripe or overripe.

  4. Weight Check:

    • It should feel heavy for its size, indicating it’s full of water and juice.

  5. Inspect the Tail:

    • A dry brown tail means it’s fully ripened. A green tail means it was picked too early.

  6. Avoid Shiny Skins or Artificial Smell:

    • Overly glossy skin or chemical smells may suggest it’s been treated or injected with sweeteners or dyes.
