KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has commended Gorkhapatra Daily for its commitment to independent journalism, stating that the national daily now operates free from external pressures.

Addressing a special program organized to mark the 125th anniversary of Gorkhapatra, Prime Minister Oli reflected on the publication’s evolution.

He noted that during the monarchy, editors were compelled to write based on royal directives, but that era has passed with the establishment of a democratic republic in Nepal.

“With the foundation of a democratic republic, Gorkhapatra has been liberated from the obligation to follow anyone’s command,” he said. He emphasized that the current government does not exert any pressure on the press and that journalists now enjoy the freedom to report what they witness and believe.

Highlighting the newspaper’s historical significance, PM Oli remarked that Gorkhapatra has navigated various political phases — from the Rana regime to monarchy — and has continued to grow throughout.

He also praised Gorkhapatra for contributing to the development of the Nepali language, describing it as a model of standard Nepali.
