World cannot afford India-Pakistan military clash

KATHMANDU: United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called on both India and Pakistan to exercise military restraint, expressing deep concern over rising tensions along the Line of Control (LoC) and the international border with Pakistan.
In a statement released by his spokesperson, Guterres said, “The world cannot afford a military confrontation between India and Pakistan.” He emphasized that tensions between the two South Asian neighbors have reached their highest point in recent years.
The UN Secretary-General urged both governments to de-escalate the situation and prioritize diplomacy. “There is no military solution to this issue,” he stated, instructing UN offices under his leadership to support efforts aimed at reducing tensions and encouraging dialogue.
Guterres also strongly condemned the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22, calling it “unacceptable” and emphasizing that civilians must never be targeted. “Those responsible for the attack must be brought to justice through credible and lawful means,” he added.
Tensions between India and Pakistan have escalated following the deadly April 22 attack on tourists in India-administered Kashmir, further straining the already fragile relationship between the two nuclear-armed nations.
