KATHMANDU: Universal Pictures has officially unveiled the first trailer for the upcoming live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon, offering fans a breathtaking first look at the 2025 reimagining of the beloved animated franchise.

Slated to hit theaters on June 13, 2025, the film promises a faithful yet visually upgraded retelling of the original 2010 animated classic.

Directed by Dean DeBlois, the filmmaker behind the original trilogy, this live-action reboot aims to recapture the magic of Hiccup and Toothless’ bond—now brought to life with cutting-edge CGI and immersive live-action storytelling.

Trailer:

The trailer introduces audiences to a dramatically realized version of the Viking island of Berk, now a rugged, storm-swept hub teeming with dragon riders, warring clans, and larger-than-life beasts. Mason Thames stars as Hiccup, the outcast-turned-hero, while Nico Parker takes on the role of Astrid in a more action-heavy and emotionally driven version of the character.

Fans were quick to respond to the first glimpses of Toothless, who retains his iconic design but appears more lifelike than ever before. The dragon’s expressive eyes and agile flight sequences are rendered with photorealistic detail, setting a new bar for fantasy creature design on the big screen.

The film also boasts a strong supporting cast, including Gerard Butler reprising his role as Stoick the Vast, alongside newcomers Julian Dennison, Nick Frost, and Bronwyn James. The world of Berk has been expanded, with hints at new dragons, deeper lore, and high-stakes conflicts that go beyond the original trilogy’s scope.

Returning to score the film is composer John Powell, whose reimagined version of the franchise’s iconic theme plays throughout the trailer, evoking both nostalgia and cinematic grandeur.

Shot on location in Northern Ireland, the production emphasizes natural environments to ground the fantasy in realism. It was also filmed with IMAX cameras, offering viewers a more immersive experience, particularly during the sweeping dragon flight and battle sequences.

A Look Back at the How to Train Your Dragon Legacy

It redefined what animated storytelling could be, earning two Academy Award nominations and launching a worldwide phenomenon.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014) – A Darker, Deeper Adventure

The film introduced a more complex villain, Drago Bludvist, and culminated in a powerful turning point for the franchise. It was widely praised for its cinematic scope, emotional weight, and bold storytelling, earning another Oscar nomination.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019) – A Bittersweet Farewell
