Rising India-Pakistan tensions: UN urges restraint
The development has triggered widespread international concern, prompting a formal response from the United Nations.

KATHMANDU: Tensions between India and Pakistan have surged to alarming levels following confirmed reports that India conducted missile strikes across the Line of Control (LoC), including areas in Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
The development has triggered widespread international concern, prompting a formal response from the United Nations.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres, through his spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, expressed “deep concern” over the Indian military actions beyond both the Line of Control and the international border. In a statement released Tuesday, Dujarric called for “maximum restraint” from both nations and emphasized the risks of further escalation.
“The Secretary-General is profoundly worried about India’s military operations across the LoC and international boundaries,” Dujarric said. “He urges both sides to refrain from the use of force and to resolve their differences through diplomatic means.”
Warning of the global implications of a military conflict between the two nuclear-armed nations, Dujarric added, “Any armed confrontation between India and Pakistan would be devastating—not only for South Asia but for the entire world.”
This comes in the wake of heightened hostilities following a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, India, on April 22, which Secretary-General Guterres condemned in strong terms. On May 5, Guterres took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), stating that the current situation marks one of the most dangerous escalations between the two countries in recent years.
With both India and Pakistan possessing nuclear capabilities, the global community has grown increasingly alarmed over the trajectory of their conflict. International leaders and organizations have consistently called for diplomatic engagement and peaceful dialogue to defuse tensions and ensure regional stability.
As developments continue to unfold, all eyes remain on South Asia, where the prospect of miscalculation or further provocation could have catastrophic consequences.
