KATHMANDU: Prabhu Shah, the president of Aam Janata Party (AJP), has raised objections to the government’s disregard for Janaki Jayanti, accusing them of gender discrimination.

Speaking in the meeting of the House of Representatives on Tuesday, Shah expressed his concern that a public holiday was not declared for the occasion of Janaki Jayanti, while Ram Navami, a similar festival, was granted a holiday.

He criticized the government, stating that if the government could offer a holiday for Ram Navami, ignoring Janaki Jayanti was discriminatory. Shah further questioned how the government could forget the birth anniversary of Sita, a revered national figure, while the Prime Minister celebrates his own birthday with grandeur. He asked, “Does the government even know about Mata Janaki? Why has Janaki Jayanti been neglected? Is it acceptable to practice gender discrimination in the 21st century?”

Shah urged the government to recognize Janaki Jayanti as a national holiday and to give it the respect it deserves.
