KATHMANDU: A gripping new play titled ‘Urf Darasingh’ has premiered at the Mandala Theatre in Thapagaun, drawing attention to the lasting consequences of poor leadership during Nepal’s Panchayat era.
The production opened on April 29 (Baisakh 16) and is running every evening at 5:30 PM, except Mondays, until May 25 (Jestha 11).
Based on oral history, Urfa Darasingh follows the story of a man named Darasingh — a fictional character shaped by the socio-political turbulence of the Panchayat regime. The play delves into thought-provoking questions such as: How did he become Darasingh? What forces molded him into who he became?
Through powerful performances and evocative storytelling, the drama critiques systemic corruption and the decay of leadership, arguing that while systems may not be inherently flawed, failed leaders continue to produce “Darasinghs” even today. The play acts as a mirror to ongoing societal issues, resonating strongly with contemporary audiences.
The play is written by Suman Lingden, produced by Suman Rai, with Manorath Pokhrel as co-producer and Rupesh Lama as associate director.
Direction is by Chetan Angthupo, who brings a dynamic and emotionally charged vision to the stage.
The cast includes a talented ensemble: Akash Suhang, Anjana Rai, Man Kumar Yonghang, Lahana Rai, Pravin Magar, Dawa Sherpa, Mani K. Rai, Numa Rai, Dayulung, Manik Shankar, Pravin Bhandari, Sanjit Thulung, Ajay Lama, Chugal Limbu, Pawan Gole, Yugal Shrestha, and Ujjwal Rai.
Urf Darasingh is more than a play — it’s a wake-up call against the continuation of flawed leadership, presented through the lens of art and history.
