KATHMANDU: Janamat Party lawmaker Abdul Khan has strongly condemned the recent arrest of Resham Lal Chaudhary, the patron of the Nagarik Unmukti Party (NUP), calling it a politically motivated move based on an “unauthorized letter” from the Supreme Court.

Speaking during Monday’s session of the House of Representatives, MP Khan criticized the government’s actions, stating that Chaudhary’s arrest on Baisakh 17 — the very day a merger between the Janamat Party and the Nagarik Unmukti Party was scheduled to be announced — has severely impacted the unity of Madhesi, Tharu, Muslim, indigenous, and marginalized communities.

Khan alleged that the arrest was part of a broader political conspiracy aimed at undermining the growing alliance between historically marginalized groups. “This incident has exposed the lack of transparency and credibility in our justice system and political processes,” he said, adding that it has shaken public faith in the rule of law.

Chaudhary, who had previously received a presidential pardon and was released from prison, was detained again at the venue of the unification program.

Khan insisted the arrest was orchestrated under questionable legal grounds, citing an unverified Supreme Court letter.

“I strongly condemn and denounce the re-arrest of Resham Lal Chaudhary on the day of the unification program. This act has cast a dark shadow over political reconciliation and ethnic solidarity,” Khan said. He demanded an impartial investigation into the incident and called for strict action against those involved.

The MP also criticized the current coalition government, stating that while it may appear strong in terms of parliamentary numbers, it lacks accountability and has failed to win public trust.

“This government is numerically strong, but it is failing to uphold democratic values and justice. That is a serious concern for all of us,” Khan remarked.
