Trump AI image as Pope sparks catholic outrage
The post, shared during a period of mourning for Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21, has sparked widespread backlash from the Catholic community.

KATHMANDU: Catholic leaders have condemned a controversial AI-generated image shared from the official Instagram account of the U.S. President’s office, depicting Donald Trump dressed as the Pope.
The post, shared during a period of mourning for Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21, has sparked widespread backlash from the Catholic community.
The image shows Trump wearing the traditional white papal robes, a prominent cross around his neck, and one finger pointed skyward — a gesture reminiscent of iconic papal imagery.
Many Catholics have deemed the portrayal deeply disrespectful, particularly as it was posted while faithful around the world are grieving the loss of Pope Francis.
The New York State Catholic Conference responded sharply, accusing Trump of mocking their faith. “This image is anything but harmless, Mr. President,” the group wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “We have just buried our beloved Pope and are now entering a solemn process to elect his successor. Please, do not trivialize our grief.”
The backlash comes just days after Trump jokingly told reporters, “I want to be the Pope,” further fanning the flames of controversy.
This is the first time a sitting or former U.S. president has faced such backlash for being portrayed in papal attire.
A year earlier, President Joe Biden — a practicing Catholic — had also drawn criticism from Church leaders for making the sign of the cross during a pro-abortion rally.
The Vatican has yet to comment on the image. Meanwhile, preparations are underway in Rome for the conclave to elect the next Pope, beginning Wednesday.
