KATHMANDU: At least six people lost their lives and more than 30 others were injured in a stampede at the Shri Lairai Devi Temple in Shirgao, located in Goa’s southwestern region, on Saturday morning.
The incident occurred during a major religious festival that had drawn thousands of devotees.
According to local authorities, ten of the injured are in critical condition and are currently receiving treatment at nearby hospitals.
The stampede is believed to have happened when an overwhelming crowd gathered for the annual festival rituals, leading to panic and chaos.
However, the exact cause is still under investigation.
A senior state official confirmed that a thorough probe has been initiated to determine what led to the tragedy.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased. “Deeply saddened by the loss of lives in the unfortunate incident at Shirgao, Goa. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. Prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured,” he said in a statement.
The Goa state government has assured that all necessary assistance is being provided to the victims and their families.
