KATHMANDU: President of the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee, Ramhari Khatiwada, has assured that the government is firmly committed to ensuring that no Nepali citizen is left stateless due to the lack of a citizenship certificate.

Speaking at an interaction program titled “Sugauli Treaty and Citizenship in Nepal,” held in Kathmandu, Khatiwada said the government is taking the issue of granting citizenship through maternal lineage very seriously. “The government’s intention is clear—no Nepali citizen should be rendered stateless simply for not having a citizenship card,” he emphasized.

Khatiwada also informed that the Citizenship Bill, which has been presented for allowing children to obtain citizenship through their mothers, will be discussed in detail within the committee. Stakeholders will be invited for consultations to gather comprehensive feedback, he added.

“The committee is committed to creating inclusive and error-free legislation,” Khatiwada stated. “If there are any loopholes or lapses in the bill, our goal is to correct them. Laws must be made by listening to the voices of all, so that no one faces legal complications.”
