Mysterious death of Nepali student in Odisha: Probe underway

KATHMANDU: An 18-year-old Nepali student, Prisa Sah, who was pursuing her first year of undergraduate studies at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Odisha, India, has been found dead in her hostel room.
According to the Embassy of Nepal in New Delhi, she was discovered hanging, and the case is currently under investigation.
The incident came to light on the night of May 1, 2025, when the embassy received information regarding the student’s death.
Following the notification, the Embassy responded promptly and has taken the incident seriously.
In its official press release, the Embassy confirmed that it has initiated coordination with the university’s senior academic officials, international student coordinator, hostel warden, and other related personnel.
During a discussion held on the morning of May 2, university officials confirmed that Prisa Sah was found hanging inside her hostel room, and that a detailed investigation is ongoing.
The Embassy also contacted the student’s mother, Mrs. Nitu Devi Mandal, and informed her about the heartbreaking incident. It assured the family that ongoing communication is being maintained and necessary support will be provided throughout the process.
Additionally, the Nepali Embassy has established continuous contact with the Government of Odisha, the Chief Minister’s Office, and other relevant Indian authorities to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation.
Nepal’s Ambassador to India, Dr. Shankar Sharma, expressed deep sorrow over the incident. In the statement, he paid tribute to the late Prisa Sah and extended heartfelt condolences to her grieving family.
As the investigation continues, further details will be released in coordination with Indian authorities.
