‘Jhilko’ released: Parents urged to watch with children at premiere

KATHMANDU: The Nepali film ‘Jhilko’, which explores the impact of digital addiction on children’s lives, family relationships, and social well-being, was officially released nationwide on Thursday evening following a grand premiere in Kathmandu.

According to distributor DCN, the film is being screened across the country in 116 shows on its opening day.

The premiere event was graced by the special presence of Deputy Speaker of the House, Indira Rana Magar. She emphasized the importance of the film’s subject matter, calling Jhalko a vital learning tool for everyone. “Every parent should watch this movie with their children,” she stated. “Local governments and municipalities should launch campaigns to screen this film widely as a special public interest project.”

The event saw attendance from journalists, filmmakers, child psychologists, pediatricians, and child rights activists.

Medical professionals and counselors expressed hope that the film would play a significant role in raising awareness about the psychological and developmental effects of technology addiction on children.

Jhilko delves into themes such as children’s dependency on smartphones, parental negligence, and how digital obsession can lead to the disintegration of family bonds.

Young actress Ayushi Dhakal stars in the lead role, supported by Sunil Pokharel, Barsha Siwakoti, Bishal Pokharel, Bholaraj Sapkota, Janvi Basnet, Jenish Shrestha, and Jevish Shrestha.

Directed by Yadav Kumar Bhattarai—best known for his acclaimed film Jhola—Jhilko is produced under the banner of Media for Culture Pvt. Ltd.

The film’s cinematography is by Deepak Bajracharya, editing by Nimesh Shrestha, sound and color by Shyam Kunwar, and sound design by Uttam Neupane.

The screenplay was co-written by Bhattarai, Arun Dev Joshi, and Dev Brat.

The film is produced by Sushila Acharya, Ramgopal Thapa, and Kiran Kumar Acharya, with Umesh Paudel as executive producer.

Jhilko was made in collaboration with Janata Television.
