KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court has issued an interim order to maintain the age limit of 65 years for the appointment of the Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank, halting the implementation of a recent amendment that sought to remove the age restriction.

A joint bench of Justices Til Prasad Shrestha and Bal Krishna Dhakal issued the interim order on Wednesday, continuing the earlier short-term order issued on April 15 by Justice Nityananda Pandey.

The earlier order had instructed not to implement the amendment that removed the age ceiling.

With the continuation of the order, the government’s decision to remove the 65-year age limit in the revised criteria has been effectively suspended.

Advocate Bishal Thapa had filed a writ petition challenging the amendment, arguing that the removal of the age limit for the governor’s appointment was unlawful and undermined institutional integrity.

The petition named the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, the Ministry of Finance, the Governor Recommendation Committee, and Nepal Rastra Bank as defendants.
