Widespread power outage in Spain & Portugal leaves 7 dead
Though the incidents vary in nature, officials believe they are all potentially linked to the unexpected disruption of the electrical supply.

KATHMANDU: A sudden and massive power outage that swept across parts of Spain and Portugal on Monday afternoon has led to tragic consequences, with at least seven deaths confirmed by Spanish authorities.
Though the incidents vary in nature, officials believe they are all potentially linked to the unexpected disruption of the electrical supply.
The most devastating incident occurred in the northwestern Spanish region of Galicia. In the town of Taboadela, a tragic discovery was made when the bodies of an elderly couple, aged 81 and 77, and their 56-year-old son were found inside their home.
Initial investigations suggest carbon monoxide poisoning caused by fumes from a generator placed outside the residence may be to blame.
One of the deceased was known to suffer from pre-existing respiratory issues and reportedly relied on supplemental oxygen at times.
Another fatal event unfolded in Madrid’s Carabanchel district later that evening.
A fire broke out in an apartment block around 10 p.m., resulting in the death of a 52-year-old man. Thirteen others required medical treatment for various injuries sustained during the blaze.
Three additional fatalities, all elderly individuals, have also been reported in Galicia.
A 59-year-old man in Ferrol, an 80-year-old in Betanzos, and an 86-year-old in Dumbría reportedly died due to causes suspected to be indirectly related to the power outage.
Authorities are still working to determine the exact cause of the electrical failure, which affected thousands across both countries.
A national-level investigation has been launched, with energy experts and emergency response teams mobilized to assess the damage and prevent future occurrences.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has addressed the nation, expressing deep concern over the events and emphasizing the government’s commitment to uncovering the root cause. “This is a matter of national importance. We will ensure a thorough investigation and take all necessary steps to prevent such a tragedy from ever happening again,” Sánchez stated.
As the country mourns the loss of life, emergency services remain on high alert, and citizens are being urged to exercise caution while power is being gradually restored.
