KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court has sought a written explanation from Nepali Congress General Secretary and Member of Parliament Gagan Thapa in connection with a contempt of court case.

An interim bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Sapana Malla Pradhan and Justice Nityananda Pandey issued the order on Sunday after a petition was filed by advocates Bishal Thapa, Anantaraj Luintel, and Pratibha Upreti.

The petition accuses Thapa of undermining the judiciary through his recent remarks.

Thapa had alleged last Thursday that the Supreme Court was involved in a “deal” regarding the delay in resolving 52 cases related to the appointment of officials to constitutional bodies.

He questioned the credibility of the judiciary, highlighting its inaction even as the tenure of officials in key commissions was nearing its end.

Currently, 52 cases concerning appointments to various constitutional bodies are under consideration in the Supreme Court.
